ROOTS COMMISSION
A proposal for a site-specific
installation at Brinkburn Priory in Northumberland,
(a building conserved by English Heritage)
The history of Brinkburn Priory is
inextricably linked to Barbados, through the complex nature of plantation ownership,
restoration and conservation relating directly to slavery and British colonialism.
The following proposals of new work form part of a new commission for identity
on tyne:
A scale 1:1 architectural blueprint is proposed to occupy the Priory floor space.
The print will depict an illustration of a contemporary Barbadian house and
its accompanying land (technically referred to as Plot 066-000). This installed
artwork will appear as a forced fit, compromised in its placement within
the church interior.
In the neighbouring decaying and empty Manor House, 20 large photographic images
of a Barbadian interior will be exhibited. The viewer can re-imagine
the historical reading of both interiors, inextricably linked through Britain's
empirical past.
